BENZOYL PEROXIDE + CLINDAMYCIN PHOSPHATE SOAP

ACNEROZ SOAP 75GM is a medicated cleansing bar combining benzoyl peroxide with clindamycin phosphate, for the topical management of acne vulgaris on the face, back and chest. It is a wash-off preparation used in place of ordinary soap, intended to reduce both the bacterial load and the follicular blockage that drive inflammatory acne.

Benefits

  • Benzoyl peroxide reduces Cutibacterium acnes on the skin surface and within the follicle without the resistance seen with antibiotics used alone.
  • Clindamycin adds a targeted antibacterial action against the organism most associated with inflammatory lesions.
  • The combination addresses papules and pustules rather than only cleansing the skin surface.
  • Benzoyl peroxide has a mild keratolytic effect that helps clear the follicular plugging behind comedone formation.
  • A wash-off bar suits patients who will not persist with a leave-on cream, and covers larger areas such as the back and shoulders easily.

Side effects

Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.

Common
  • Dryness, scaling or tightness of the treated skin
  • Mild burning or stinging on application
  • Redness of the treated area
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight
Less common
  • Marked peeling or dermatitis with overuse
  • Contact allergy presenting as itching and persistent redness
  • Bleaching of hair, towels, bedding or coloured clothing by benzoyl peroxide
  • Worsening of acne during the first two to three weeks of use
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
  • Severe blistering, crusting or swelling of the treated skin
  • Swelling of the face, lips or eyelids
  • Difficulty breathing or tightness in the throat
  • Severe or spreading rash beyond the area treated

Precautions

  • For external use only. Avoid the eyes, lips, inside of the nostrils and any broken or eczematous skin.
  • Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to benzoyl peroxide, clindamycin or lincomycin.
  • Not recommended for patients with a history of antibiotic-associated colitis; absorbed clindamycin can rarely provoke it even from topical use.
  • Introduce gradually — once daily at first — as most irritation comes from over-frequent use in the first fortnight.
  • Benzoyl peroxide bleaches fabric and hair. Rinse thoroughly and use white towels and bedding.
  • Use sun protection during treatment, as the skin becomes more sun-sensitive.
  • Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding only on medical advice.
