• Etoricoxib provides anti-inflammatory and analgesic action with less gastric ulceration than non-selective NSAIDs.
• Thiocolchicoside acts on GABAergic and glycinergic pathways to release the muscle spasm that an anti-inflammatory alone will not resolve.
• Treating spasm and inflammation together restores movement and allows physiotherapy to begin earlier.
• Thiocolchicoside relieves spasm with less sedation than several older muscle relaxants.
• Once-daily etoricoxib dosing keeps the regimen simple during a short course.

Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.

• Thiocolchicoside is restricted to short courses of no more than seven consecutive days because of genotoxicity concerns with prolonged exposure.
• Contraindicated in pregnancy, in women of childbearing potential not using reliable contraception, and in breastfeeding.
• Contraindicated in a history of seizures, as thiocolchicoside can lower the seizure threshold.
• Contraindicated in ischaemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, heart failure and uncontrolled hypertension because of the etoricoxib.
• Contraindicated in active peptic ulceration, severe hepatic or renal impairment, and NSAID hypersensitivity.
• May cause drowsiness. Warn the patient before driving or operating machinery, and avoid alcohol.
• Check blood pressure before starting and during treatment.
