• Ambroxol thins tenacious sputum and stimulates surfactant, which helps children clear secretions from the smaller airways.
• Guaiphenesin increases secretion volume and lowers viscosity, making the cough more productive.
• Terbutaline relaxes bronchial smooth muscle, easing the wheeze that accompanies childhood chest infections.
• Combining mucolytic, expectorant and bronchodilator avoids giving a child three separate preparations.
• The syrup allows dosing by weight and is generally well accepted by children.

Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.

• Dose strictly by age and weight using the measure supplied; never substitute an adult preparation.
• Not for children below the age stated on the label without paediatric advice.
• Tremor and a faster heartbeat from the terbutaline are expected; warn the parent.
• Use with caution in children with cardiac disease, hyperthyroidism or diabetes.
• Do not combine with a cough suppressant or with any other cough preparation containing the same ingredients.
• Maintain good fluid intake throughout.
• Seek review urgently for fast breathing, chest indrawing, difficulty feeding or persistent fever.
