BESTID MPS SYP
ANTACID
BESTID MPS SYP is an oral antacid suspension for the symptomatic relief of acidity, heartburn, acid reflux, indigestion and epigastric burning. It neutralises gastric acid already present in the stomach, giving relief within minutes rather than by reducing acid production.

Benefits
- Neutralises gastric acid directly, so relief is felt within minutes of a dose — faster than acid-suppressing tablets.
- Useful for breakthrough symptoms in patients already on a proton pump inhibitor or H2 blocker.
- Coats and soothes the irritated oesophageal and gastric mucosa in reflux.
- The liquid form spreads over the mucosal surface more effectively than a tablet.
- Suitable for occasional as-needed use without the need for a continuing daily medicine.

Side effects
Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.
Common
- Loose stools or constipation, depending on the magnesium and aluminium balance
- Bloating or belching
- Nausea
- Chalky taste
Less common
- Abdominal cramping
- Reduced absorption of other medicines taken at the same time
- Rebound acidity after frequent heavy use
- Raised serum magnesium or aluminium in renal impairment
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
- Black or tarry stools, or vomiting of blood
- Difficulty or pain on swallowing
- Unexplained weight loss, or persistent vomiting
- Severe or persistent abdominal pain
- Chest pain, or pain radiating to the jaw or left arm

Precautions
- Antacids interfere with the absorption of many drugs — including tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, iron, thyroid hormone and azithromycin. Separate doses by at least two hours.
- Use with caution in renal impairment, where magnesium and aluminium can accumulate to harmful levels.
- Not for long-term daily use. Persistent symptoms need a diagnosis rather than continued self-treatment.
- Contains sodium in some formulations — check before use in heart failure, hypertension or a sodium-restricted diet.
- Shake well before each dose and use the measure supplied.
- Alarm features — difficulty swallowing, weight loss, vomiting blood, black stools, or anaemia — need urgent investigation, not an antacid.
- Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding only on medical advice.
