BESTO CALAMINE LOTION is a topical lotion of calamine with aloe vera, for the relief of itching and minor skin irritation. It is used for prickly heat, insect bites, sunburn, mild rashes, and the itching of chickenpox, providing a soothing and mildly astringent effect on the skin surface.

Benefits

  • Calamine has a cooling, mildly astringent action that relieves itching and helps dry weeping or oozing lesions.
  • Aloe vera adds a soothing, moisturising effect that offsets the drying tendency of calamine alone.
  • Non-steroidal and non-medicated in the pharmacological sense, so it is suitable for broad areas and repeated application.
  • Widely used for the itch of chickenpox, where reducing scratching reduces secondary infection and scarring.
  • Useful in prickly heat and after sun exposure, where a cooling effect is what the patient wants.

Side effects

Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.

Common
  • Dryness or tightness of the treated skin
  • Visible pink residue on the skin
  • Mild transient stinging on broken skin
  • Flaking as the lotion dries
Less common
  • Contact dermatitis with itching and redness
  • Worsening of the rash being treated
  • Staining of clothing and bedding
  • Sensitisation on repeated use
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
  • Swelling of the face, lips or tongue, or difficulty breathing
  • Spreading redness, warmth, pus or increasing pain, suggesting infection
  • Fever alongside a worsening rash
  • Severe blistering or ulceration of the treated area

Precautions

  • For external use only. Avoid the eyes, mouth and inside of the nose.
  • Do not apply to deep wounds, extensive burns, or heavily infected skin without medical advice.
  • Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to calamine, zinc oxide or aloe vera.
  • Shake well before use, and apply thinly with cotton wool rather than rubbing in.
  • Relieves itching only — a rash that is spreading, blistering, painful or accompanied by fever needs assessment.
  • Discontinue if the skin becomes more irritated after starting.
  • Keep away from the eyes and out of reach of children.
