BESTO PRE & PRO BIOTIC SACHET

PREBIOTIC + PROBIOTIC POWDER

BESTO PRE & PRO BIOTIC SACHET is a sachet of prebiotic and probiotic powder, a food supplement rather than a medicine. It is used to help restore the balance of gut flora after antibiotic courses, during and after gastroenteritis, and in functional bowel disturbance such as bloating and irregular bowel habit.

01

Benefits

  • Provides live beneficial organisms that help re-establish the gut flora depleted by antibiotics or by an episode of gastroenteritis.
  • The prebiotic component is a fermentable fibre that feeds the beneficial organisms already present, supporting them as well as those introduced.
  • Reduces the incidence and duration of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea when taken alongside a course.
  • May shorten the duration of infectious diarrhoea and ease bloating and irregular bowel habit in functional bowel disturbance.
  • The sachet form mixes into water, milk or food and suits patients of all ages, including those who cannot swallow capsules.
02

Side effects

Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.

Common
  • Bloating or flatulence, particularly in the first few days
  • Mild abdominal cramping
  • Loose stools when first started
  • Rumbling or gurgling of the abdomen
Less common
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Increased thirst if fluid intake is not raised alongside the fibre
  • Skin rash in those sensitive to the milk or soya base
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
  • High fever with diarrhoea, or blood in the stool
  • Signs of dehydration — reduced urine, dry mouth, marked lethargy
  • Severe or persistent abdominal pain
  • Swelling of the face, lips or tongue, or difficulty breathing
  • Diarrhoea persisting beyond a few days despite treatment
03

Precautions

  • A food supplement, not a medicine, and not a treatment for infection. Diarrhoea with high fever or blood in the stool needs medical assessment.
  • Avoid in severely immunocompromised patients, in those with a central venous catheter, and in the critically ill — live organisms have rarely caused systemic infection in these groups.
  • Separate the dose from an antibiotic by at least two hours, or the antibiotic will kill the organisms it is meant to replace.
  • Increase fluid intake alongside the prebiotic fibre to avoid bloating and constipation.
  • Introduce gradually; the initial wind and bloating usually settle within a few days.
  • Do not mix into hot liquids, which kill the live organisms. Store as directed, refrigerated where the label requires it.
  • Use in infants and young children only on paediatric advice.
  • Rehydration, not probiotics, is the priority in acute diarrhoea — this is an adjunct.
