AMOXY 250MG

BESTOMOX 250MG CAP R/W is a capsule of amoxicillin 250 mg, a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic. It is used for respiratory tract infections, ear, nose and throat infections, urinary tract infections and skin and soft-tissue infections caused by susceptible organisms, at the lower of the standard adult strengths.

Benefits

  • Bactericidal against a broad range of Gram-positive and some Gram-negative organisms, covering the common community pathogens.
  • Well absorbed orally and largely unaffected by food, which makes dosing straightforward.
  • A long-established first-line choice in otitis media, sinusitis, streptococcal pharyngitis and community-acquired chest infection.
  • Generally well tolerated, with a safety record extending to use in pregnancy and in young children.
  • The 250 mg strength suits milder infections, smaller adults and step-down dosing.

Side effects

Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.

Common
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhoea or loose stools
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Skin rash
Less common
  • Oral or vaginal thrush after the course
  • Raised liver enzymes on testing
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Black or discoloured tongue
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
  • Swelling of the face, lips or tongue, difficulty breathing, or collapse
  • Widespread rash with blistering or peeling skin
  • Severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during or in the weeks after the course
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding

Precautions

  • Contraindicated in known penicillin allergy. A history of penicillin anaphylaxis is an absolute contraindication — check before dispensing.
  • Use with caution in patients with a cephalosporin allergy because of the possibility of cross-reactivity.
  • Avoid in suspected infectious mononucleosis, where amoxicillin frequently causes a florid rash.
  • Dose reduction is required in significant renal impairment.
  • Complete the full prescribed course even once symptoms settle, to limit the emergence of resistance.
  • Amoxicillin is ineffective against viral infections; most sore throats and colds do not need it.
  • May reduce the reliability of oral contraceptives if vomiting or diarrhoea occurs — advise additional precautions.
  • Generally considered acceptable in pregnancy and breastfeeding, but use on medical advice.
