BESTOMOX 500MG CAP Y/Y is a capsule of amoxicillin 500 mg, a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic. It is used for respiratory tract infections, ear, nose and throat infections, urinary tract infections and skin and soft-tissue infections, at the standard adult strength for most indications.

Benefits

  • Bactericidal against a broad range of Gram-positive and some Gram-negative organisms covering the common community pathogens.
  • The 500 mg strength is the standard adult dose for most indications, including community-acquired pneumonia and sinusitis.
  • Well absorbed orally and largely unaffected by food.
  • A long-established first-line agent with a well-characterised safety profile.
  • Also used as part of eradication regimens for Helicobacter pylori and in dental prophylaxis where indicated.

Side effects

Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.

Common
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhoea or loose stools
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Skin rash
Less common
  • Oral or vaginal thrush after the course
  • Raised liver enzymes on testing
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Black or discoloured tongue
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
  • Swelling of the face, lips or tongue, difficulty breathing, or collapse
  • Widespread rash with blistering or peeling skin
  • Severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during or in the weeks after the course
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding

Precautions

  • Contraindicated in known penicillin allergy. A history of penicillin anaphylaxis is an absolute contraindication.
  • Use with caution in patients with a cephalosporin allergy because of possible cross-reactivity.
  • Avoid in suspected infectious mononucleosis, where amoxicillin frequently causes a florid rash.
  • Dose reduction is required in significant renal impairment.
  • Complete the full prescribed course even once symptoms settle.
  • Ineffective against viral infections; most colds and sore throats do not need an antibiotic.
  • May reduce the reliability of oral contraceptives if vomiting or diarrhoea occurs.
  • Generally considered acceptable in pregnancy and breastfeeding, but use on medical advice.
