BESTOMOX-CV DROPS WFI is an oral drops preparation of amoxicillin with clavulanate potassium, reconstituted with the water supplied. The drops format is intended for infants and very young children, where dosing must be precise and volumes are small, for ear, respiratory, urinary and skin infections.

Side effects

Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.

Common
  • Diarrhoea or loose stools
  • Vomiting or posseting after a dose
  • Nappy rash or perianal soreness
  • Skin rash
Less common
  • Oral thrush
  • Raised liver enzymes on testing
  • Irritability or disturbed sleep
  • Reduced feeding
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
  • Swelling of the face, lips or tongue, difficulty breathing, or floppiness
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine
  • Severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea
  • Widespread rash with blistering or peeling skin
  • Refusal to feed, reduced wet nappies, or unusual drowsiness

Precautions

  • For infants, dosing must be by body weight and by the prescriber's instruction only. Use the dropper supplied and never estimate.
  • Contraindicated in known penicillin allergy.
  • Reconstitute exactly with the water supplied, shake before each dose, refrigerate after reconstitution, and discard after the stated period.
  • Give during a feed to reduce vomiting and improve absorption.
  • Dose reduction is required in renal impairment.
  • Seek review urgently if the infant refuses feeds, has fewer wet nappies, or becomes unusually drowsy or floppy.
  • Complete the full prescribed course; never keep leftover drops for a later illness.
