• The roll-on applicator delivers the preparation without needing to rub it in by hand, which is useful for painful or hard-to-reach areas.
• Topical application avoids the gastric and renal effects of oral analgesics, which matters in the elderly and in patients who cannot take NSAIDs.
• Counter-irritant preparations of this type produce a warming or cooling effect that eases the perception of underlying pain.
• Massage during application improves local blood flow and relieves muscular stiffness.
• Can be used alongside oral treatment for additional local relief.

Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.

• Check the pack for the specific active ingredients before use, and confirm the patient is not sensitive to them — topical analgesic preparations vary considerably in composition.
• For external use only. Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds, burns or mucous membranes.
• Do not use with a heating pad or under a tight occlusive dressing — counter-irritant preparations can cause serious burns this way.
• If the product contains a salicylate or an NSAID, avoid it in aspirin-sensitive asthma and in NSAID hypersensitivity, and avoid in the third trimester of pregnancy.
• Avoid contact with the eyes and wash hands after application unless the roll-on avoids hand contact entirely.
• Discontinue if the skin becomes irritated, and test on a small area first in anyone with sensitive skin.
• Symptomatic relief only. Persistent pain, marked swelling, deformity or pain after significant injury needs medical assessment.
• Keep out of reach of children, and use in pregnancy, breastfeeding and in young children only on advice.
