DICLOFENAC 1.16% + LINSEED 3% + METHYSALIC 10% + MENTHOL 5%

DURA SPRAY 55GM is a topical spray combining diclofenac 1.16%, linseed oil 3%, methyl salicylate 10% and menthol 5%. It is used for localised musculoskeletal pain — sprains, strains, backache, joint pain and sports injury — delivering an anti-inflammatory directly to the affected area.

Benefits

  • Topical diclofenac penetrates to the underlying tissue and reduces local inflammation with far lower systemic exposure than an oral NSAID.
  • Methyl salicylate and menthol give an immediate counter-irritant warming and cooling effect that provides rapid perceived relief.
  • The spray applicator reaches the back and shoulders without assistance and avoids rubbing an acutely painful area.
  • Avoids the gastric, renal and cardiovascular risks that limit oral NSAIDs, particularly in the elderly.
  • Useful alongside oral treatment, or alone in patients for whom oral NSAIDs are contraindicated.

Side effects

Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.

Common
  • Burning, warmth or tingling at the application site
  • Local redness
  • Dryness or itching of the treated skin
  • Strong aroma
Less common
  • Contact dermatitis with persistent redness and itching
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight in the treated area
  • Rash spreading beyond the application site
  • Peeling of the treated skin
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
  • Severe burning, blistering or ulceration of the treated skin
  • Wheeze or breathlessness after application, particularly in aspirin-sensitive asthma
  • Swelling of the face, lips or tongue, or difficulty breathing
  • Widespread rash with blistering or peeling skin
  • Accidental spraying into the eyes causing persistent pain

Precautions

  • For external use only. Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds, burns, eczematous skin or mucous membranes.
  • Contraindicated in NSAID or aspirin hypersensitivity, including aspirin-sensitive asthma — topical NSAIDs and salicylates can still provoke bronchospasm.
  • Do not use with a heating pad or under an occlusive dressing; this can cause serious burns and increases absorption.
  • Avoid in the third trimester of pregnancy, and use earlier in pregnancy or while breastfeeding only on medical advice.
  • Do not use on large areas or for prolonged periods without advice — enough diclofenac is absorbed to matter in renal impairment or with concurrent oral NSAIDs.
  • Wash hands after application and avoid contact with the eyes. Flammable — do not spray near a flame.
  • Avoid sun exposure of the treated area.
  • Persistent pain, marked swelling, deformity or pain after significant injury needs assessment.
