FERROBEST F TAB AL/AL
FERROUS ASCOR 100MG + FOLIC ACID 1.5MG
FERROBEST F TAB AL/AL is a tablet of ferrous ascorbate 100 mg with folic acid 1.5 mg. It is used for iron deficiency anaemia and for iron and folate supplementation in pregnancy, in adolescent girls and in women with heavy menstrual loss, where both deficiencies commonly occur together.
01
Benefits
- Ferrous ascorbate is better absorbed and generally better tolerated than ferrous sulphate, with less gastric irritation.
- The ascorbate component enhances iron absorption from the gut.
- Folic acid is required for red cell production, and deficiency causes a megaloblastic anaemia that iron alone will not correct.
- Folate supplementation in pregnancy reduces the risk of neural tube defects, and this combination is standard antenatal practice in India.
- One tablet covers both deficiencies, improving adherence over the months that correcting anaemia takes.
02
Side effects
Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.
Common
- Black or dark stools, which is expected and harmless
- Constipation
- Nausea or epigastric discomfort
- Metallic taste
Less common
- Diarrhoea
- Abdominal cramping
- Vomiting
- Temporary staining of the teeth
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
- Black or tarry stools with abdominal pain, which may be gastrointestinal bleeding
- Vomiting of blood
- Severe abdominal pain or persistent vomiting
- Swelling of the face, lips or tongue, or difficulty breathing
- Accidental overdose, particularly in a child
03
Precautions
- Keep strictly out of reach of children. Iron overdose is a leading cause of fatal childhood poisoning.
- Contraindicated in haemochromatosis, iron overload states, and anaemias not due to iron deficiency.
- Folic acid alone can correct the anaemia of vitamin B12 deficiency while allowing neurological damage to progress. Exclude or treat B12 deficiency first.
- Establish that the anaemia is iron-deficient before treating rather than treating empirically.
- Take on an empty stomach for best absorption; with food if nausea is limiting.
- Separate from tea, coffee, milk, calcium and antacids by at least two hours.
- Separate from tetracycline and fluoroquinolone antibiotics and from thyroid hormone by at least two hours.
- Continue for the full period advised — replenishing stores takes months beyond normalising haemoglobin.
