GENTAROS INJ 2ML

GENTA 2ML INJ

GENTAROS INJ 2ML is a 2 ml injection of gentamicin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic given intramuscularly or by intravenous infusion. It is used for serious Gram-negative infections — septicaemia, complicated urinary tract, intra-abdominal, respiratory and skin infections — often alongside a beta-lactam antibiotic.

01

Benefits

  • Bactericidal against a broad range of Gram-negative organisms including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Proteus and Pseudomonas.
  • Acts synergistically with beta-lactam antibiotics, a combination long established in serious sepsis and in endocarditis.
  • Concentration-dependent killing with a post-antibiotic effect, supporting once-daily regimens that are effective and less nephrotoxic.
  • Achieves high urinary concentrations, useful in complicated urinary tract infection.
  • Long-established, widely available and inexpensive.

Side effects

Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.

Common
  • Pain or redness at the injection site
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Rash
Less common
  • Rise in serum creatinine indicating renal impairment
  • Ringing in the ears or a sense of fullness in the ear
  • Dizziness or unsteadiness from vestibular effects
  • Low serum magnesium, potassium or calcium
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
  • Any new hearing loss, ringing in the ears, or vertigo — these may become permanent
  • A marked fall in urine output
  • Muscle weakness or difficulty breathing
  • Numbness or tingling of the face or extremities
  • Severe rash, facial swelling or difficulty breathing

Precautions

  • Gentamicin is nephrotoxic and ototoxic. Renal function must be checked before and during treatment, and hearing assessed where courses are prolonged.
  • Dose must be adjusted to renal function and body weight, with therapeutic drug monitoring — particularly in the elderly, in renal impairment, and beyond a few days of treatment.
  • Contraindicated in known aminoglycoside hypersensitivity and in pre-existing significant hearing or vestibular impairment.
  • Contraindicated in pregnancy — aminoglycosides cross the placenta and can cause irreversible congenital deafness.
  • Avoid concurrent loop diuretics, amphotericin B, vancomycin and other nephrotoxic or ototoxic agents where possible.
  • Contraindicated or used with extreme caution in myasthenia gravis, as it can precipitate neuromuscular blockade.
  • Keep the patient well hydrated and limit courses to the shortest clinically effective duration.
  • For administration by a qualified healthcare professional. Do not mix in the same syringe or line as a beta-lactam antibiotic.
