Benefits

  • Bactericidal against a broad range of Gram-negative organisms including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Proteus and Pseudomonas.
  • Acts synergistically with beta-lactam antibiotics in serious sepsis and endocarditis.
  • Concentration-dependent killing with a post-antibiotic effect, supporting once-daily dosing.
  • Achieves high urinary concentrations, useful in complicated urinary tract infection.
  • The multi-dose vial suits wards and clinics where the drug is used frequently.

  • Dose must be adjusted to renal function and body weight, with therapeutic drug monitoring.
  • Contraindicated in aminoglycoside hypersensitivity, in pre-existing hearing or vestibular impairment, and in pregnancy.
  • Avoid concurrent loop diuretics, amphotericin B, vancomycin and other nephrotoxic or ototoxic agents where possible.
  • Contraindicated or used with extreme caution in myasthenia gravis.
  • Keep the patient well hydrated and limit courses to the shortest effective duration.
  • Do not mix in the same syringe or line as a beta-lactam antibiotic.
