CEFIXIME 200MG + LACTIC ACID BACILLUS

INDOXIME-LB 200MG M/C is a tablet of cefixime 200 mg with lactic acid bacillus, a third-generation oral cephalosporin combined with a probiotic. It covers the same respiratory, ENT, typhoid and urinary infections as cefixime alone, with the probiotic included to offset the gut disturbance the antibiotic causes.

Benefits

  • Good Gram-negative cover including beta-lactamase-producing Haemophilus and Moraxella.
  • Lactic acid bacillus helps re-establish the gut flora the antibiotic depletes.
  • Reduces antibiotic-associated diarrhoea, which is a particularly common problem with cefixime.
  • Once- or twice-daily dosing improves adherence.
  • Useful in patients with a history of gastrointestinal upset on antibiotics, and in the elderly.

Side effects

Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.

Common
  • Diarrhoea or loose stools
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Bloating or flatulence
  • Abdominal discomfort
Less common
  • Oral or vaginal thrush after the course
  • Raised liver enzymes on testing
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Skin rash
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
  • Swelling of the face, lips or tongue, difficulty breathing, or collapse
  • Severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during or in the weeks after the course
  • Widespread rash with blistering or peeling skin
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Reduced urine output or blood in the urine

Precautions

  • Contraindicated in known cephalosporin allergy; use with caution in penicillin allergy and avoid after penicillin anaphylaxis.
  • The probiotic component should be avoided in severely immunocompromised patients, in central venous catheter carriers, and in the critically ill.
  • Dose reduction is required in significant renal impairment.
  • Complete the full prescribed course even once symptoms settle.
  • Ineffective against viral infections.
  • Cefixime has poor activity against Staphylococcus aureus and is not appropriate for most skin infections.
  • Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding only where clearly indicated.
