IVERMECTIN 12MG
IVERMENT-12 TAB is a tablet of ivermectin 12 mg, an antiparasitic. It is used for scabies, strongyloidiasis, filariasis and head lice, and in the mass treatment programmes for lymphatic filariasis, working by paralysing the parasite's nerve and muscle cells.

Benefits
- Highly effective in scabies, particularly where topical treatment has failed or is impractical across a household or institution.
- Oral dosing treats scabies without the need to apply a cream over the whole body, which improves adherence substantially.
- The treatment of choice in crusted (Norwegian) scabies and in institutional outbreaks.
- First-line for strongyloidiasis, including the hyperinfection syndrome in immunocompromised patients.
- A single dose is often sufficient, with a second dose after one to two weeks in scabies to cover newly hatched mites.
- Well established in mass drug administration programmes with an extensive safety record.

Side effects
Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.
Common
- Itching, which may transiently worsen after treatment as dying mites release antigen
- Rash
- Nausea or abdominal discomfort
- Dizziness or headache
Less common
- Fever
- Muscle or joint aches
- Swollen or tender lymph nodes
- Diarrhoea
- Tiredness
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
- Severe rash with blistering or peeling skin
- Swelling of the face, lips or tongue, or difficulty breathing
- Confusion, marked drowsiness, unsteadiness or seizures
- Severe abdominal pain
- Persistent high fever with swollen glands

Precautions
- Itching commonly worsens for one to two weeks after successful treatment — this is a reaction to dying mites, not treatment failure. Tell the patient, or they will assume it has not worked.
- Treat all household and close contacts simultaneously, and wash bedding and clothing in hot water, or reinfestation is certain.
- Take on an empty stomach with water, unless the prescriber directs otherwise.
- Not recommended in children below the weight stated on the label, and use in pregnancy only where clearly indicated. Use in breastfeeding on medical advice.
- Use with caution in patients who may have loiasis from travel or residence in Central Africa, where treatment can precipitate a serious encephalopathic reaction.
- Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to ivermectin.
- Avoid alcohol around the dose, and use with caution alongside warfarin.
- Ivermectin is not a treatment for viral infections; use it only for the parasitic indications for which it is prescribed.
