KETACONAZOLE 1% SHAMPOO

KETOBEST SHAMPOO is a medicated shampoo containing ketoconazole 1%, an antifungal. It is used for dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp, and as maintenance treatment to prevent recurrence, at the lower strength suited to regular use.

Benefits

  • Ketoconazole targets Malassezia, the yeast that drives dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis — treating the cause rather than just removing scale.
  • The 1% strength is suited to regular or maintenance use, where the 2% strength is used for active treatment.
  • Reduces the itching, flaking and redness of seborrhoeic dermatitis.
  • Regular use prevents the recurrence that follows stopping treatment, which is the usual pattern in this condition.
  • A wash-off preparation is easily incorporated into normal hair washing.

Side effects

Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.

Common
  • Dryness of the scalp or hair
  • Itching or mild burning during application
  • Change in hair texture
  • Local redness
Less common
  • Increased hair shedding
  • Contact dermatitis with persistent redness and itching
  • Discolouration of chemically treated or grey hair
  • Scalp irritation with over-frequent use
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
  • Severe scalp irritation, blistering or ulceration
  • Swelling of the face, lips or eyelids, or difficulty breathing
  • Widespread rash beyond the scalp
  • Marked hair loss
  • No improvement after four weeks of correct use

Precautions

  • For external use on the scalp only. Avoid the eyes; rinse thoroughly with water if contact occurs.
  • Leave the lather on the scalp for three to five minutes before rinsing — rinsing immediately gives too little contact time to work.
  • Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to ketoconazole or other azole antifungals.
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis is controlled rather than cured; maintenance use is usually needed to prevent relapse.
  • May affect the colour of chemically treated, permed or grey hair.
  • Do not use on broken or badly inflamed scalp skin without advice.
  • Seek review if there is no improvement after four weeks, or if the scalp becomes weeping, crusted or painful.
