KETACONAZOLE 2% SHAMPOO

KETOROZ SHAMPOO is a medicated shampoo containing ketoconazole 2%, an antifungal. It is used for the active treatment of dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp, and tinea versicolor, at the higher strength used to bring an active condition under control.

Benefits

  • Ketoconazole targets Malassezia, the yeast driving dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis, treating the cause rather than removing scale.
  • The 2% strength is the treatment concentration for active disease, stronger than the 1% maintenance formulation.
  • Effective in tinea versicolor, where it can be applied to the trunk as well as the scalp.
  • Reduces the itching, flaking and redness of seborrhoeic dermatitis, often within two weeks.
  • Once the condition is controlled, treatment can be stepped down to a lower strength or reduced frequency.

Side effects

Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.

Common
  • Dryness of the scalp or hair
  • Itching or mild burning during application
  • Change in hair texture
  • Local redness
Less common
  • Increased hair shedding
  • Contact dermatitis with persistent redness and itching
  • Discolouration of chemically treated or grey hair
  • Scalp irritation with over-frequent use
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
  • Severe scalp irritation, blistering or ulceration
  • Swelling of the face, lips or eyelids, or difficulty breathing
  • Widespread rash beyond the treated area
  • Marked hair loss
  • No improvement after four weeks of correct use

Precautions

  • For external use only. Avoid the eyes; rinse thoroughly with water if contact occurs.
  • Leave the lather on for three to five minutes before rinsing — contact time is what makes it work.
  • Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to ketoconazole or other azole antifungals.
  • In tinea versicolor, apply to all affected areas of the trunk, not just the scalp, and expect the pale patches to persist for months after the fungus has cleared.
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis is controlled rather than cured; maintenance treatment is usually needed.
  • May affect the colour of chemically treated, permed or grey hair.
  • Do not use on broken or badly inflamed scalp skin without advice.
  • Seek review if there is no improvement after four weeks.
