M CAINE GEL

OXETACAINE + ALUMI.HYD + MAGNESIUM HYDROXIDE

M CAINE GEL is an oral gel combining oxetacaine, a local anaesthetic, with aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide antacids. It is used for painful acid-related conditions — oesophagitis, gastritis, peptic ulcer pain and reflux — where the burning pain itself needs numbing as well as the acid neutralising.

01

Benefits

  • Oxetacaine is a topical anaesthetic that numbs the inflamed oesophageal and gastric mucosa directly, relieving pain within minutes.
  • The antacid components neutralise gastric acid already present, so relief is faster than with acid-suppressing tablets.
  • The combination is particularly useful in painful oesophagitis, where acid suppression alone leaves the patient in discomfort for days.
  • Also used before endoscopy and in radiation-induced or drug-induced oesophagitis.
  • The gel coats the mucosal surface more effectively than a tablet.

Side effects

Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.

Common
  • Numbness of the mouth, tongue and throat
  • Loose stools or constipation, depending on the aluminium and magnesium balance
  • Nausea
  • Chalky taste
Less common
  • Bloating or belching
  • Abdominal cramping
  • Reduced absorption of other medicines taken at the same time
  • Raised serum magnesium or aluminium in renal impairment
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
  • Black or tarry stools, or vomiting of blood
  • Difficulty or pain on swallowing, or choking
  • Unexplained weight loss, or persistent vomiting
  • Severe or persistent abdominal pain
  • Dizziness, ringing in the ears, or numbness of the lips and tongue beyond the expected effect

Precautions

  • The anaesthetic numbs the throat and impairs the gag reflex. Do not eat or drink for at least an hour after a dose — there is a real risk of choking or aspiration.
  • Numbing pain can mask the symptoms of a serious condition. Do not use to treat undiagnosed persistent abdominal or chest pain.
  • Antacids interfere with the absorption of many drugs including tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, iron and thyroid hormone — separate by at least two hours.
  • Use with caution in renal impairment, where magnesium and aluminium accumulate.
  • Not for long-term daily use; persistent symptoms need a diagnosis.
  • Alarm features — difficulty swallowing, weight loss, vomiting blood, black stools, anaemia — need urgent investigation.
  • Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to oxetacaine or other local anaesthetics.
  • Shake well before each dose and use the measure supplied.
