MEFROS FORTE TAB

MEFENAMIC ACID 250MG + PARACETAMOL 325MG

MEFROS FORTE TAB is a tablet of mefenamic acid 250 mg with paracetamol 325 mg. It is used for pain and fever — particularly period pain, headache, dental and musculoskeletal pain — combining an NSAID with particular efficacy in dysmenorrhoea and a central analgesic.

01

Benefits

  • Mefenamic acid is especially effective in dysmenorrhoea, where prostaglandin-driven uterine contraction is the underlying mechanism.
  • It also reduces menstrual blood loss, an advantage in women with heavy periods.
  • Paracetamol adds central analgesia and antipyresis, allowing useful pain relief at a lower NSAID burden.
  • Effective for dental pain, headache and musculoskeletal pain as well as period pain.
  • Onset of relief is typically within an hour of a dose.

Side effects

Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.

Common
  • Diarrhoea, which is notably more frequent with mefenamic acid than other NSAIDs
  • Nausea, indigestion or epigastric discomfort
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headache or dizziness
Less common
  • Gastric erosion, ulceration or gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Raised liver enzymes
  • Skin rash or itching
  • Drowsiness
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
  • Severe or persistent diarrhoea — this is a reason to stop mefenamic acid, not to persist
  • Black, tarry stools or vomiting of blood
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Seizures, particularly in overdose
  • Swelling of the face, lips or tongue, or difficulty breathing
  • A marked fall in urine output

Precautions

  • Diarrhoea with mefenamic acid can signal colitis and is an indication to stop the drug rather than continue.
  • Mefenamic acid is particularly dangerous in overdose, causing seizures — an important consideration in patients at risk of self-harm.
  • Contraindicated in active peptic ulcer disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and a history of gastrointestinal bleeding.
  • Contraindicated in severe hepatic or renal impairment, and in NSAID hypersensitivity including aspirin-sensitive asthma.
  • Check total daily paracetamol intake across all products before adding this one.
  • Avoid in the third trimester of pregnancy; use earlier in pregnancy and while breastfeeding only on medical advice.
  • Limit to short courses — mefenamic acid is not intended for prolonged use.
  • Take with or after food, and avoid alcohol during the course.
