MEFENAMIC ACID 100MG + PARACETAMOL 250MG
MEFROS-P FORTE 60ML SUS MC is an oral suspension of mefenamic acid 100 mg with paracetamol 250 mg per dose. It is a paediatric preparation for fever and pain, with the dose set by age and body weight by the prescriber.

Benefits
- The liquid form allows dosing by body weight, which fixed-strength tablets cannot.
- Paracetamol brings down fever and raises the pain threshold centrally.
- Mefenamic acid adds anti-inflammatory action, useful where fever is accompanied by inflammation or body ache.
- Suits children and anyone who cannot swallow tablets.
- Onset of relief is typically faster than with a solid dose form.

Side effects
Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.
Common
- Diarrhoea, which is more frequent with mefenamic acid than other NSAIDs
- Nausea or vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Drowsiness
Less common
- Gastric irritation
- Raised liver enzymes
- Skin rash or itching
- Reduced urine output
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
- Severe or persistent diarrhoea — stop the medicine and seek advice
- Black, tarry stools or vomiting of blood
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes
- Seizures
- Persistent vomiting, or signs of dehydration
- Widespread rash with blistering or peeling skin

Precautions
- Dose strictly by body weight and by the prescriber's instruction, using the measure supplied. Never use a household spoon.
- Diarrhoea with mefenamic acid is a reason to stop the medicine, not to continue.
- Do not combine with any other paracetamol-containing preparation — this is the commonest route to paediatric paracetamol overdose.
- Avoid in dehydration or reduced fluid intake, which increases the renal risk from the NSAID.
- Contraindicated in active peptic ulcer disease, inflammatory bowel disease, severe hepatic or renal impairment, and NSAID hypersensitivity.
- Give with or after food to limit gastric irritation, and shake well before each dose.
- Limit to short courses, and reassess if fever persists beyond three days.
- Keep out of reach of children — mefenamic acid causes seizures in overdose.
