OMEPRAZOLE 20MG
OMEEBEST 20 CAP is a capsule of omeprazole 20 mg, a proton pump inhibitor. It is used for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcer disease, acid dyspepsia, the prevention of NSAID-related ulceration, and as part of Helicobacter pylori eradication regimens.

Side effects
Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.
Common
- Headache
- Diarrhoea or constipation
- Abdominal pain or flatulence
- Nausea
Less common
- Dizziness
- Skin rash
- Dry mouth
- Raised liver enzymes
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
- Severe or persistent diarrhoea, which may indicate Clostridioides difficile infection
- Severe muscle cramps, weakness, tremor or an irregular heartbeat, which may indicate low magnesium
- Black or tarry stools, or vomiting of blood
- Difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss or persistent vomiting
- Widespread rash with blistering or peeling skin
- Reduced urine output or blood in the urine

Precautions
- Take thirty to sixty minutes before food. A proton pump inhibitor taken after a meal is substantially less effective, and this is the commonest reason for apparent treatment failure.
- Alarm features — weight loss, difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, anaemia — need investigation before starting, as acid suppression can mask gastric malignancy.
- Long-term use is associated with low magnesium and vitamin B12, an increased risk of fracture, and enteric infection including Clostridioides difficile. Review the need periodically rather than continuing indefinitely.
- Omeprazole reduces the effect of clopidogrel — discuss an alternative proton pump inhibitor in patients on it.
- Reduced gastric acidity impairs absorption of ketoconazole, itraconazole, iron and some antiretrovirals.
- Swallow the capsule whole; do not crush or chew, as this destroys the acid-resistant coating.
- Dose reduction may be required in significant hepatic impairment.
- Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding only on medical advice.
