PC COLD 60ML SYP is an oral syrup combining chlorpheniramine maleate with phenylephrine. It is used for the symptomatic relief of a runny and blocked nose in colds and allergic rhinitis, without paracetamol, so it can be given alongside a separate antipyretic.

Benefits

  • Chlorpheniramine dries the runny nose and settles sneezing and watery eyes.
  • Phenylephrine constricts the nasal mucosal vessels, relieving blockage and improving sleep and feeding.
  • Contains no paracetamol, so it can be combined with a separate antipyretic without risk of duplication.
  • The liquid form allows dosing by age and weight.
  • The sedating antihistamine can help a patient sleep when nasal symptoms are disturbing rest.

Side effects

Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.

Common
  • Drowsiness and sedation
  • Dry mouth, nose and throat
  • Dizziness
  • Restlessness or difficulty sleeping
Less common
  • Palpitations or a raised heart rate
  • Blurred vision
  • Difficulty passing urine
  • Constipation
  • Paradoxical excitability in children
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
  • Severe drowsiness or difficulty rousing
  • Fast, pounding or irregular heartbeat
  • Confusion, hallucinations or unusual agitation
  • Difficulty breathing or wheeze
  • Inability to pass urine

Precautions

  • Contraindicated in uncontrolled hypertension, ischaemic heart disease, significant arrhythmia and hyperthyroidism because of the phenylephrine.
  • Contraindicated in narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention and significant prostatic enlargement.
  • Do not give with, or within fourteen days of, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor.
  • Causes drowsiness, and can paradoxically cause excitability in children. Warn before driving in adults.
  • Not for children below the age stated on the label without paediatric advice.
  • Do not combine with another antihistamine or decongestant preparation.
  • For short-term use only; reassess if symptoms persist beyond five days.
  • Dose by age and weight using the measure supplied, and avoid alcohol.
