PIPTAROS 4.5GM INJ VIAL
PIPERACILLIN SOD + TAZOBACTAM SOD.INJ
PIPTAROS 4.5GM INJ VIAL is a vial of piperacillin sodium with tazobactam sodium for injection, a broad-spectrum penicillin combined with a beta-lactamase inhibitor. It is a hospital antibiotic for serious infections — hospital-acquired pneumonia, intra-abdominal sepsis, complicated urinary tract infection, febrile neutropenia and severe skin and soft-tissue infection.
01
Benefits
- One of the broadest antibacterial spectra available, covering Gram-positive, Gram-negative and anaerobic organisms including Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
- Tazobactam inhibits beta-lactamase, restoring piperacillin's activity against resistant organisms.
- Single-agent cover for polymicrobial intra-abdominal and pelvic sepsis.
- A standard empirical choice in febrile neutropenia and hospital-acquired sepsis where delay is dangerous.
- Extended-infusion administration improves time above the minimum inhibitory concentration, which determines beta-lactam efficacy.
02
Side effects
Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.
Common
- Diarrhoea or loose stools
- Nausea or vomiting
- Skin rash
- Pain or thrombophlebitis at the infusion site
Less common
- Raised liver enzymes on testing
- Low platelet or white cell count with prolonged therapy
- Low serum potassium
- Fever or eosinophilia
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
- Swelling of the face, lips or tongue, difficulty breathing, or collapse
- Severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during or in the weeks after the course
- Widespread rash with blistering or peeling skin
- A marked fall in urine output
- Unusual bruising or bleeding
- Seizures
03
Precautions
- Contraindicated in known penicillin allergy. A history of penicillin anaphylaxis is an absolute contraindication.
- A broad-spectrum reserve antibiotic. Use empirically where serious infection demands it, then de-escalate on culture results.
- Dose reduction is required in renal impairment; accumulation causes neurotoxicity and seizures.
- The combination with vancomycin increases the risk of acute kidney injury — monitor renal function closely where both are used.
- Contains a significant sodium load — relevant in heart failure and fluid restriction.
- Monitor blood counts, renal function and electrolytes during prolonged courses.
- Do not mix in the same syringe or line as an aminoglycoside.
- For administration by a qualified healthcare professional only.
