• Broad-spectrum antimicrobial action against bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa and spores — wider than most other antiseptics.
• The povidone complex releases iodine gradually, giving sustained activity with less irritation than free iodine.
• Long established as a surgical skin preparation, with the visible colour showing exactly which area has been prepared.
• No significant bacterial resistance has emerged despite decades of widespread use.
• Effective on both intact skin and contaminated wounds.

Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.

• For external use only. Never swallow, and avoid the eyes.
• Contraindicated in known iodine hypersensitivity, in thyroid disease including Hashimoto's thyroiditis and nodular goitre, and before or after radioiodine treatment.
• Avoid regular or extensive use in pregnancy, in breastfeeding and in neonates — absorbed iodine crosses the placenta and enters breast milk, and can suppress the infant's thyroid.
• Do not use on large areas, deep wounds or extensive burns for prolonged periods; absorbed iodine can cause thyroid dysfunction and, rarely, renal impairment.
• Do not allow solution to pool under a patient or under an occlusive dressing — this causes chemical burns.
• Allow to dry fully before diathermy or use of any ignition source, as some preparations are flammable.
• Interferes with thyroid function tests; mention recent use before testing.
• Do not combine with hydrogen peroxide or silver-containing preparations, which inactivate it.
