POVIDONE IODINE + ORNIDAZOLE
POVIROS-O 15GM OINT is a topical ointment combining povidone iodine with ornidazole. It is used for infected wounds, ulcers, bed sores and diabetic foot lesions, where both aerobic and anaerobic organisms are present, particularly where there is odour or necrotic tissue.

Benefits
- Povidone iodine gives broad-spectrum cover against bacteria, fungi and viruses.
- Ornidazole adds specific activity against the anaerobic organisms that colonise chronic and necrotic wounds.
- Anaerobic organisms are the main source of wound odour, which this combination addresses directly.
- Particularly useful in diabetic foot ulcers, bed sores and chronic wounds where mixed flora is the rule.
- The ointment base holds both agents in contact with the wound surface longer than a solution.

Side effects
Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.
Common
- Temporary brown staining of skin and dressings
- Mild stinging on application
- Local redness
- Dryness of surrounding skin
Less common
- Contact dermatitis with persistent redness and itching
- Skin irritation with prolonged use
- Sensitisation on repeated exposure
- Delayed wound healing with prolonged use on granulating tissue
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
- Spreading redness, warmth, swelling, increasing pain or fever — signs of spreading infection needing systemic antibiotics
- Swelling of the face, lips or tongue, or difficulty breathing
- Severe burning, blistering or ulceration
- Black tissue, or a wound that is deepening rather than healing
- Any new foot ulcer, numbness or non-healing wound in a person with diabetes

Precautions
- For external use only. Avoid the eyes and mucous membranes.
- Contraindicated in known iodine hypersensitivity, in thyroid disease, and before or after radioiodine treatment.
- Avoid regular or extensive use in pregnancy, breastfeeding and in neonates because of absorbed iodine.
- Do not use on large wounds for prolonged periods; absorbed iodine can cause thyroid dysfunction, and both components are absorbed from a large raw surface.
- Diabetic foot lesions need specialist assessment. A topical preparation is an adjunct to debridement, offloading, vascular assessment and systemic antibiotics — not a substitute.
- Spreading infection, cellulitis or systemic illness needs systemic antibiotics, not just topical treatment.
- Prolonged use on healthy granulation tissue can delay healing.
- Interferes with thyroid function tests; mention recent use before testing.
