CEFPODOXIME 200MG + CLAVU ACID 125MG TAB
RITEPOD 200 CV TAB AL/AL 'S is a tablet combining cefpodoxime 200 mg with clavulanic acid 125 mg. The clavulanate protects the cefpodoxime from bacterial beta-lactamase, extending cover to resistant organisms in respiratory, urinary, skin and soft-tissue infections.

Benefits
- Clavulanate inhibits beta-lactamase, restoring cefpodoxime's activity against organisms that would otherwise inactivate it.
- Retains cefpodoxime's broad Gram-positive and Gram-negative spectrum.
- A useful escalation where a plain cephalosporin course has failed or resistant organisms are likely.
- Twice-daily oral dosing keeps the regimen practical.
- Provides an oral option in infections that might otherwise need injectable therapy.

Side effects
Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.
Common
- Diarrhoea, which is more frequent than with cefpodoxime alone
- Nausea or vomiting
- Abdominal discomfort
- Skin rash
Less common
- Oral or vaginal thrush after the course
- Raised liver enzymes on testing
- Headache or dizziness
- Indigestion
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
- Swelling of the face, lips or tongue, difficulty breathing, or collapse
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or pale stools
- Severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during or in the weeks after the course
- Widespread rash with blistering or peeling skin
- Reduced urine output

Precautions
- Contraindicated in known cephalosporin allergy; use with caution in penicillin allergy and avoid after penicillin anaphylaxis.
- Clavulanate carries a risk of cholestatic jaundice, more so in the elderly and with prolonged courses.
- Take with food, which improves cefpodoxime absorption and reduces diarrhoea.
- Avoid antacids and proton pump inhibitors around the dose.
- Dose reduction is required in significant renal impairment.
- Reserve for cases where a beta-lactamase inhibitor is genuinely needed.
- Complete the full prescribed course.
