CEFPODOXIME 50MG + CLAUV ACID 31.25
RITEPOD CV DRY SYP 30ML+WFI is a dry syrup of cefpodoxime 50 mg with clavulanic acid 31.25 mg per dose, reconstituted before use. It is a paediatric preparation for otitis media, sinusitis and respiratory infection where beta-lactamase-producing organisms are likely.

Benefits
- Clavulanate protects cefpodoxime from beta-lactamase, covering resistant strains common in childhood ear and sinus infection.
- Retains cefpodoxime's broad Gram-positive and Gram-negative cover.
- A useful second-line option where a plain cephalosporin or amoxicillin has failed.
- The liquid form allows accurate weight-based dosing.
- Twice-daily dosing is manageable for children and their carers.

Side effects
Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.
Common
- Diarrhoea or loose stools
- Nausea or vomiting
- Abdominal discomfort
- Skin rash
Less common
- Oral or nappy-area thrush after the course
- Raised liver enzymes on testing
- Irritability or disturbed sleep
- Bitter aftertaste
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
- Swelling of the face, lips or tongue, difficulty breathing, or collapse
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine
- Severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during or in the weeks after the course
- Widespread rash with blistering or peeling skin
- Persistent vomiting, or signs of dehydration

Precautions
- Contraindicated in known cephalosporin allergy; use with caution in penicillin allergy and avoid after penicillin anaphylaxis.
- Clavulanate carries a risk of cholestatic jaundice; keep courses short.
- Give with food to improve absorption and reduce diarrhoea, and avoid antacids around the dose.
- Reconstitute exactly to the mark, shake before every dose, and use the measure supplied.
- Store as directed after reconstitution and discard after the stated period.
- Dose strictly by body weight on the prescriber's instruction.
- Complete the full prescribed course; never keep a part-used bottle for a future illness.
