TOOTH PASTE
SENSOBEST TOOTH GEL is a dental gel for sensitive teeth, used in place of ordinary toothpaste. It is used for dentine hypersensitivity — the sharp short pain provoked by cold, hot, sweet or acidic foods — which follows gum recession or enamel wear exposing the underlying dentine.

Benefits
- Desensitising toothpastes reduce the sharp pain of dentine hypersensitivity, usually over two to four weeks of regular use.
- Works either by blocking the exposed dentinal tubules or by reducing nerve excitability, depending on the active agent.
- Used as a straight replacement for ordinary toothpaste, so it needs no change of routine.
- Suitable for long-term daily use as maintenance in patients with persistent sensitivity.
- Fluoride-containing formulations also protect against decay in the exposed root surfaces where sensitivity arises.

Side effects
Not everyone gets these. Most are mild and settle as the course finishes.
Common
- Transient tingling or numbness of the gums
- Altered taste
- Mild gum irritation
- Increased salivation
Less common
- Mouth ulceration or soreness in sensitive individuals
- Dryness of the mouth
- Staining with some formulations
- Burning sensation of the tongue
Stop and get medical help if any of these occur
- Persistent or throbbing toothache, particularly at night, or pain that lingers after the stimulus is removed — this suggests pulp involvement, not simple sensitivity
- Facial swelling, or pain with fever
- Bleeding, receding or painful gums
- A tooth that is loose, cracked or discoloured
- Mouth ulceration that has not healed in three weeks

Precautions
- Sensitivity that persists beyond a few weeks of regular use needs dental examination. Decay, a cracked tooth, a failing filling and pulpitis all present similarly and none respond to a desensitising gel.
- Pain that lingers after the stimulus, wakes the patient at night, or comes with swelling is not simple sensitivity and needs urgent dental assessment.
- Give it four weeks of twice-daily use before judging it — desensitising agents work gradually.
- Do not rinse vigorously immediately after brushing; leaving a film on the teeth improves the effect.
- Address the cause alongside — over-vigorous brushing, a hard brush, acidic drinks and grinding all drive sensitivity and will defeat the gel.
- Not for children below the age stated on the label; supervise brushing in children and discourage swallowing.
- Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to any component.
