SUCRAROS 200ML SUSP

SUCRALFATE

SUCRAROS 200ML SUSP is an oral suspension of sucralfate, a mucosal protective agent. It is used for peptic ulcer disease, gastritis, reflux oesophagitis and the prevention of stress ulceration, forming a protective barrier over the ulcer surface rather than reducing acid.

01

Benefits

  • Forms a physical protective layer over the ulcer base, shielding it from acid, pepsin and bile while it heals.
  • Works locally without reducing gastric acid, so it does not carry the long-term risks of acid suppression.
  • Minimal systemic absorption, which makes it a useful option in pregnancy and in patients on multiple medicines.
  • Also stimulates local prostaglandin and mucus production, supporting mucosal defence.
  • Widely used for stress ulcer prophylaxis in critically ill patients, where preserving gastric acidity reduces pneumonia risk.

Precautions

  • Sucralfate binds many other drugs and markedly reduces their absorption — fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines, digoxin, phenytoin, levothyroxine, warfarin and others. Separate all other medicines by at least two hours.
  • Take on an empty stomach, at least an hour before meals — food prevents it binding to the ulcer surface.
  • Contains aluminium. Use with caution in renal impairment, where aluminium accumulates and can cause neurotoxicity and bone disease.
  • Alarm features — weight loss, difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, anaemia — need investigation.
  • Do not take within thirty minutes of an antacid, which interferes with its action.
  • Increase fluid and fibre to offset constipation.
  • Shake well before each dose and use the measure supplied.
